What do you do when the Daily Mail wants to photograph you in your bedroom sat at your dressing table. Oh, and BTW, they want to pop round in three days time for the shoot. Bloody panic that’s what! A. My bedroom hadn’t been decorated in like forever and B. I didn’t own a dressing table! Undeterred, well you’re not going to turn that down are you? I set out to design a scheme for the room on an as always (yes, you guessed it) own brand lemonade budget. Here’s my bedroom revamp!
MY BEDROOM – THE BEFORE SHOT
The room up until this point had always been light. The furniture and walls were all a light cream. The natural progression was to flip the colour scheme and go dark. Well in my head it was anyway because there was no time for mood boards or drawing up a scheme! I just had to go with what was in my head. Mr RFW though did take some convincing. In the end I promised I would return the room to how it was before if he didn’t like it. After all I said, ‘it’s only paint’.
To create maximum impact on a minimal budget paint is always my first port of call. After all you can totally transform a space quickly and without spending a fortune. So off I trot to B&Q to look at colour cards, my go to paint is always Valspar. So far it’s never let me down and they have a scrubable matt emulsion too. If like me you have a flobby dog you know the value of being able to wash your walls. As there was no time for buying tester pots and trying out different colours I threw caution to the wind, ignored my inner procrastination’s and plumped for Dinner Jacket. It’s a wonderfully rich dark grey without any blue hues. A perfect neutral with a warm tone.

Now when you have to complete a room within 3 days it pays to plan. And decorating the room in the correct order helps to speed everything up tremendously. So whilst I set about painting the room Mr RFW and Eldest RFW very kindly offered to paint all the furniture for me. This was a god send to be honest. Without their help there was no way that I could finish the room on time. The furniture was all starting to look a little sad and forlorn. The original paint which was once a subtle cream was now very yellow. A sad down side of today’s lighter paint recipes. The quickest and by far the fastest way to transform it was going to be with spray paint.
As you know though, spray paint can be very expensive. And with two wardrobes, two bedside cabinets, a chest of drawers and a bed to paint that could’ve been a costly investment. So instead of using the paint you normally find in your local hardware store I opted for car spray paint in satin black. Car spray paint is by far a more superior product and as if that’s not already great, it’s cheaper too! And more hard wearing. This only left me with the bed upholstery to replace and was a huge weight off my mind.
MY BEDROOM FURNITURE AFTER SPRAY PAINTING
Once I’d painted the walls I had one of those light bulbs moments! Or a spot of madness, you decide. I do love a room to have several focus points so no matter which direction you look your eye is drawn to an attractive feature. The fireplace at this point was still cream and needed to either be stripped or painted again. Stripping was out as I just didn’t have enough time available to me. And knowing that I was going to have the shop the house for the accessories I knew that the room needed some life injected into it too. And that’s when the idea to paint it gold along with the mirror above sprang to mind. It would, I hope perfectly balance up the wall of rather dominating wardrobes. And create a talking point too.
Luckily I have a Hobbycraft close by and a quick trip saw me return home with two cans of Montana Gold spray paint in Gold Chrome. This was the start of an addiction to this paint! No, I’m not sniffing it! But it appears if it’s not nailed down I just have to paint it with this paint! My addiction has become so all encompassing that if I am ever near to running out I have to stock up! And when I get to Hobbycraft if they only have 2 tins left I have to buy both of them. Ya know, just in case! So with my paint can in hand and the surrounding walls protected I started to apply the gold. And oh, I’m so glad I did, because love it or hate it, you certainly cannot ignore that fireplace now!
THE GOLD FIREPLACE IN MY BEDROOM
With the fireplace complete all I had to do was mask up the mirror and give that a spritz too. And then it was time to turn my attention to the bed. As I said earlier Mr RFW and Eldest RFW had very kindly spent hours spray painting the furniture for me. They painted for so many hours that they ran out of face masks! At the point I returned home with the velvet to reupholster the bed I found Eldest RFW laughing his head off on the sofa. Completely off his tits on spray paint fumes. I do recommend that when using spray paints, please, please, always work in a well ventilated area and wear a good quality mask too.
The bed was actually very easy to upholster. The panels are quite a basic shape so it only took a couple of hours to upholster it with the black velvet I bought locally. Thank goodness we still have a haberdashery, it seems to be a dying trade doesn’t it? Once I stapled on the velvet all that was left to do was glue braid around the edges to hide the staples and neaten the edges. And then it was time to dress the room. I bought a few bits and bobs like candles but other than that I shopped the house moving pieces from other rooms into here. I did also dye a sheepskin that I picked up for a tenner. It looks amazing on the floor and has most definitely become a favourite spot for the dog. I also bought some house plants but as always, try as I might not to, I killed them within a month. I know, it’s a talent!
THE TV CORNER – TRYING TO MAKE IT BLEND IN AS PART OF MY BEDROOM REVAMP
TBH the room still doesn’t feel quite finished but then does a room ever? Are you like me? I finish a room, think YES!! Sit back and admire it lovingly for a week or so and then before you know it you think of things that need adding or taking away. I loved the ceiling light I chose for the room but I’m not so sure about it now. It was a budget buy as most things are in my home but it look budget if that makes sense?? Whilst it’s staying for now, at some point when I find that absolute bargain on Ebay, it will be going! So what do you think to my makeover? Are you a fan of the before? Or the After? I’d love to hear your thoughts, please do leave a comment below.
So that’s my bedroom revamp, what do you think? Oh and before I go. For those of you wanting to know about the shoot for the Daily Mail. I got my hands on a dressing table (working for a bedroom company did have its perks) and the shoot went ahead. But and it’s a big BUT! They carried the dressing table downstairs to my sitting room because my bedroom wasn’t big enough!!! FFS, where’s the face plant emoji when you need it?
